Simple, Homemade Bread

There's nothing quite like warm, home-baked bread! Adding eggs creates an extra rich flavor that will keep you wanting more. MAKES TWO LOAVES.

Ingredients

2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
2 1/4 cups warm water
1/4 cup sugar
1 tbsp salt
2 eggs (optional)
2 tbsp oil
6 1/2 cups whole wheat or all purpose flour

1 egg (for glaze)

Directions

Add yeast to warm water and wait until frothy and bubbly (about 10 mins).

Combine yeast/water mix with sugar, salt, 2 eggs (optional) and oil in a large bowl. Slowly add flour, kneading gently. Once all flour is combined, knead continuously for 6-8 minutes until smooth and slightly shiny. Form dough into ball shape and place in oiled bowl. Cover with a tea towel for about an hour or until doubled in size.

Once dough has risen, punch down (gently) and split into two. For each half, roll edge into a slightly cylindrical shape. Place each half into lightly greased loaf pan and cover again for 1-2 hours until once again it has doubled in size.

Preheat oven to 375°F. Beat the remaining egg in a small bowl until smooth. Brush gently onto the surface of your dough until both loaves are well covered. Bake for 30-35 minutes until outside is firm and golden, and sound hollow when tapped.

Serve warm with butter, or let cool and slice for sandwiches. Enjoy!
