Star Anise

Star anise is a star-shaped spice derived from the fruit of the Illicium verum tree, native to Southeast Asia. Each star-shaped pod contains several small seeds and imparts a potent licorice-like flavor with subtle hints of sweetness and warmth. It is a key ingredient in many Asian cuisines, particularly Chinese and Vietnamese, and is prized for its aromatic properties in both culinary and medicinal applications.

Suggested use: Star anise can also be used to flavor beverages and desserts, adding complexity and depth to various recipes. In beverages, such as mulled wine, chai tea, or spiced cider, simmer star anise with other spices to create a warming and aromatic drink. Additionally, ground or finely crushed star anise can be incorporated into desserts like cakes, cookies, custards, and poached fruits to impart a unique, anise-like flavor that pairs well with chocolate, citrus, and other sweet ingredients.
